So it’s come to the big day, you have walked down the isle, said your vows and now you make your way to the reception. But wait a minute, there are people wondering about aimlessly and relatives arguing over who is sitting where, sounds like an extremely ill planned wedding indeed. Don’t let this be you! The reception is (bar actually getting married) one of the most important parts to a wedding as all of your friends and family will be there and you want them to have a fun and exciting time.

Traditionally in wedding venues, seating consists of a main table where the bride, groom, best man, maid of honor and parents of the bride and groom sit, ready for when there are speeches to be made. This set up is effective and works  well as there will only be one focal point for your guests when the time comes. This is something you can change if you so wish, after all it is your wedding, however it is highly suggested that this method is used. You can look around for local wedding venues or for standard seating plans on this website.

The rest completely depends upon the number of guests and plus ones you have invited. Be sure to have a total number of guests a week before the wedding so that you can be sure to have enough food, seats and tables for guests. If you have a large number of guests you need to think wisely as to where they all sit. Putting different families on different tables is one option, however this can leave gaps in where you have to stick random friends in. A better way to go about it is to think in two’s, as long as everyone on a table has one buddy or relative to talk to, you can afford to slightly split people up.

It is common practice to stick relatives and closer friends nearer to the head table, you can do this if you wish but be sure to put smaller children nearer the back (so that when speeches are made, there is no interruption of noise) and older relatives nearer to the toilets and/or close to the table as the less distance they have to travel, the better and you want them to be able to hear your speech!

You can invest in a wedding planner who can figure this all out for you, however in doing so you cannot guarantee that your guests will all be sat where you would like them or where they would like to be. Having someone close to you who knows what you want would be best if you do not have the time to do so yourself. Ask yours guests where they wish to sit, it may sound a little blunt and to the point but it can and will help you towards all of your seating arrangements, as someone you may think wants to sit at the front may really want to sit in the back, where it is less busy.
